I gave a foundational study for the messages I would be preaching in the AM and PM services. I explained that Galatians 5:17 is more fully developed in Romans 7;14-23.
This is a picture of the Carnal Christian (the Christian who is plagued by The Flesh, the Old Man, the Carnal Mind.
However, God delivers from all sin, including the Evil Heart of Unbelief.
Ga. 5:17 is an abbreviated form of Ro. 7:14-23.
We are all born with a Human Nature and a Sinful Nature (sin, the flesh, carnal mind, old man). The SN and the HN are not the same.
The HN is the nature to be human (body, soul and spirit), given by God at creation.
The SN is the nature to be sinful (evil heart of unbelief, the likeness of Adam), passed on to all humans from Adam.
The HN is redeemable but the SN is not redeemable.
At salvation we are given a Divine Nature (2 Pe. 1:4).
In our early Christian life, the HN is in conflict, deciding whether to yield to the SN or the DN.
The power of choice resides in the HN.
The word "LAW" is used in various ways in Romans 7.
The Law of Moses (vs.1).
The Whole Law of God, as found in the entire revelation of God (vs. 22), which includes the Moral Law written on the heart of men (vs. 25, see also 2:15).
The Law of Sin, also called Another Law (vss. 23, 25); also called the Law of Sin and Death (8:2). This "law" is The Flesh, the Sinful Nature, the Old Man, the Carnal Mind. This is the inherited corruption and propensity to sin (the root of sin), from which proceed sinful actions (the fruit of sin).
It is the presence of The Flesh (SN) that causes the believer to not do what he wants to do and to do what he does not want to do (Ro. 7:14-23; Ga. 5:17).
There is no hope for The Flesh (sinful nature, carnal mind, old man) since it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be (Ro. 8:7). The sinful nature cannot be redeemed, whereas, sinful man (human nature) can be redeemed
However, grace provides deliverance for the Wretched Man (vs. 24), the believer who is double minded (Ja. 1:8; 4:8). God delivers us from being a carnal Christian (1 Co. 3:1-3) through crucifixion of The Flesh (Ga. 5:24), The Old Man (Ro. 6:6).
After deliverance from The Flesh, the HN still must choose between God and Satan. Adam, without SN was faced with the same choice and eventually faltered. Jesus faced with the same choice always conquered. We can either be influenced by the First Adam or the Last Adam (1 Co. 15:45), the First Man or the Second Man (1 Co. 15:47).
