2/1/10 A LESSON I TAUGHT ON ENTIRE SANCTIFICATION

A LESSON I TAUGHT ON ENTIRE SANCTIFICATION
OUTLINE
I. SANCTIFICATION IS GOD'S WILL.
II. IT IS DEFINED, 1- Setting Apart (a- from sin, b- to God), & 2- Making Holy.
III. TRAITS OF THE SANCTIFIED (Added material*).
IV. IT IS REQUIRED FOR SERVICE.
V. THREE DIVINE AGENCIES are: the Word of God, the Blood of Christ & the Holy Spirit.
VI. SANCTIFIED BY FAITH.

I. SANCTIFICATION IS GOD'S WILL
ACTS 20:32

32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.

1 THESSALONIANS 4:3-4, 7-8
3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification...
4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honor;
7 For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.
8 He therefore that despises, despises not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his Holy Spirit.

1 THESSALONIANS 5:23-24
23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24 Faithful is he that calls you, who also will do it.

The whole purpose of God's salvation is to restore the lost to a right relationship with God, and Sanctification is a major part of that restoration.

II. SANCTIFICATION DEFINED...
Sanctification is both a Setting Apart and a Making Holy. There is a “negative” (take away) side and a “positive” (add to) side to “setting apart.” We are Set Apart From Sin and Set Apart To God. Since only God is inherently holy, we are made holy when we are emptied of sin and filled with God (1 Th. 4:7-8, 1 Pe. 1:15-16).

Set Apart and Made Holy...
LEVITICUS 20:7

7 Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the LORD your God.

LEVITICUS 20:26
26 And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the LORD am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine.

Sanctification (Initial, Entire and Progressive)
* Initial Sanctification takes place at Justification (Jn. 15:3),
* Entire Sanctification is subsequent to Justification (1 Th. 5:23-24) and
* Growth in Sanctification is the result of a continued walk in the light (1 Jn. 1:7).

III. TRAITS OF THE ENTIRELY SANCTIFIED
Entire Sanctification, as a subsequent and definite work of God's grace in believers, includes the experience (not simply the provision) of the following traits (among other things).
1. We are perfect (in love) as our Father in heaven is perfect (Mt. 5:43-48);

2. We have the desire and ability to keep God's commandments (Jn. 14:21-24; Ph. 2:13; 1 Jn. 3:24)

3. We abide in Christ (Jn. 15:5, 10)

4. We are purified from all sin (Mt. 5:8; Ac. 15:9; 1 Tm. 1:5; 2 Tm. 2:22; 1 Pe. 1:22; 1 Jn. 3:3);

5. We know (by faith) that our Old Man was crucified with Christ, so that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we will no longer serve sin (Ro. 6:6);

6. We have become dead to sin (Ro. 6:10-11);

7. We are delivered from the body of death (Ro. 7:24-25);

8. We do not live in the flesh nor do we walk according to the flesh (Ro. 8:1, 9);

9. We are delivered from the law of sin and death (Ro. 8:2);

10. We are delivered from the carnal mind (Ro. 8:7);

11. We are conformed to the image of Jesus (Ro. 8:29);

12. We are cleansed from all filthiness of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God (2 Co. 7:1);

13. We have crucified the flesh with its affections and lusts (Ga. 5:24);

14. We are crucified to the world and the world to us (Ga. 6:14);

15. We are rooted and grounded in love and filled with all the fullness of God (Ep. 3:17,19);

16. We have put on the New Man and put off the Old Man (Ep. 4:22, 24);

17. We are holy, sons of God, being without spot, wrinkle blemish and being harmless and unreprovable (Ep. 5:27; Ph. 2:15; Co. 1:22);

18. We have the mind of Christ (Ph. 2:5);

19. We are filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; we walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, pleasing Him in everything; we are fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; we are strengthened with all might and attaining to all patience and longsuffering in joyfulness and made worthy to share in the inheritance of the sons of light (Co. 1:9-12);

20. We are rooted and grounded in faith; we are complete in Christ; (Co. 2:7, 10);

21. We are established unblamable in holiness and kept from the evil one (1 Th. 1:13; 3:3);

22. We live godly lives and suffer persecution (2 Tm. 3:12);

23. We are made perfect (personally complete) and thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Tm. 3:17);

24. We resist ungodliness and worldly lust and we live righteously, soberly and godly in this present time (Ti. 2:12);

25. We are delivered from an evil heart of unbelief (He. 3:12).

26. We are delivered from the root of bitterness (He. 12:15);

27. We are delivered from double mindedness (Ja. 4:8);

28. We do not sin because we abide in Christ (1 Jn. 3:6);

John Wesley said Entire Sanctification is, “Approached gradually, entered into suddenly and grown in forever.”

NOTICE, these verses do not say that we are SEEN with these traits, or that these traits are, COUNTED TOWARD US.
These traits are real and present in the lives of the entirely sanctified.
They are not simply provisional, but they are attainable, here and now.

IV. SANCTIFICATION REQUIRED FOR SERVICE...
The prayer recorded in John 17 is the prayer Jesus prayed and should be called the Lord's Prayer, the prayer that our Lord Prayed. The prayer Jesus taught His disciples, which begins, “Our Father, Who art in heaven...” is more properly called The Model Prayer.

In this Lord's prayer, Jesus bears witness to the salvation of the disciples in 17:6-16. In 17:7 He prays for His disciples to be entirely sanctified. In 17:18-20 Jesus states His desire that all of His followers should share the gospel with other people. But remember, His desire for their sanctification is first.

In Luke's account of the Great Commission, Jesus tells the disciples that they will preach the gospel to all nations, but they must tarry in Jerusalem to be endued with the Holy Spirit (Lk. 47-50). In Acts we are told that the disciples were to take the gospel into all the world, after they received the Holy Spirit.

In the Jerusalem Counsel, Peter affirmed that the Gentile believers had received the fulness of the Holy Spirit in the same way as the Jewish believers on the Day of Pentecost, having their hearts purified by faith (Ac. 15:9).

In the Parable of the Vine and the Branches, Jesus pointed out that the purified branches bear more fruit.

V. THREE DIVINE AGENCIES IN SANCTIFICATION
* The Word of God
* The Blood of Christ
* The Holy Spirit

Sanctified Through the Word of God...
PSALMS 119:9, 11

9 Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.
11Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

JOHN 17:17
17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

EPHESIANS 5:26
26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

DLG notes...
A thorough and continuous washing is essential to a clean body. A thorough and continuous application of the Word of God to our hearts and lives is essential to a pure heart.

Sanctified Through the Sacrifice/Blood of Christ...
EPHESIANS 5:25-26

25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it...

HEBREWS 9:14
14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

HEBREWS 10:10,14
10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
14 For by one offering he hath perfected forever them that are sanctified.

HEBREWS 13:12
12 Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.

DLG notes...
Without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin.

Sanctified by the Holy Spirit...
ROMANS 15:16

16 That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost.

1 PETER 1:2
2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

VI. SANCTIFIED BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH...
ACTS 26:18

18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

ACTS 20:32

32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.

HEBREWS 13:12-13
12 Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.
13 Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach.

DLG notes...
Sanctification is a work of God's grace, done in our behalf, but not separate from our will, faith and commitment.

We cannot sanctify ourselves any more than we can regenerate ourselves.

We are saved by grace through faith and likewise, we are sanctified by grace through faith.
